Preventing Frozen Pipes in a Calgary Cold Snap
Calgary cold snaps can drop below minus 30. A single burst pipe can release hundreds of litres of water an hour, so a few minutes of prevention is well worth it.
Before the cold arrives
- Disconnect garden hoses and shut off outdoor taps from inside
- Insulate pipes in unheated areas such as garages, crawl spaces and exterior walls
- Seal drafts near pipes where cold air gets in
- Know where your main water shut-off valve is
During a cold snap
- Keep your thermostat at a steady temperature day and night
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to let warm air in
- Let a tap on an exterior wall drip slowly overnight
- Keep the garage door closed if water lines run through it
If you are travelling
Leave the heat on at no lower than about 15°C, and ask someone to check your home regularly. Some insurance policies require regular checks while you are away in winter, so confirm what yours says.
If a pipe freezes
If a tap only trickles, a pipe may be frozen. Keep the tap open and warm the pipe gently with a hair dryer or warm towels, starting near the tap. Never use an open flame.
If a pipe bursts
Shut off the main water valve immediately, turn off power to wet areas if it is safe to do so, and call for emergency water extraction. Fast drying is what prevents mold and keeps repair costs down.
